New exhibition DESCENT delves into the psychological journey between two worlds. Art@111 are pleased to showcase the latest work of local artist Marianne Moore.
In a society obsessed with progress and success, this emotionally resonant and visually striking exhibition offers a welcome tonic: exploring an in-between time of self-confrontation, healing and initiation.
Moore takes us on a journey confronting fear, aridity and stagnation through her highly textured oil paintings. The story is individual but also universal: many of us have taken this route into the ‘underworld.’
Inspired by pagan texts and mysteries, stories of ancient goddesses and their descent, the works convey a Heroine’s Journey, a time when she is tested in the dark. These paintings also represent a contraction in Moore’s own experiences, and a period of change. Painted in 2025, these paintings are a culmination of a period in Moore’s life when nothing seemed to be working, moving, or giving back. A time to look inwards for strength. The ending of one life but without yet inhabiting the next: a time of incubation, evolution, constriction and the unknown, feeling stuck, and struggling to move from the shadows to the light.
Moore uses thickly applied oil paint which she manipulates with scultptural force to resemble necklines, spikes, and explosions appearing to rip out from the canvas. Her works are highly visceral, drawing you in but also repelling by their matter-like form. The create a tactile relationship with the viewer.
As Moore says,
“Traditional ideas of progress feel linked with “success”, both terms are defined by what our mainstream culture sees as acceptable, but not necessarily what is good, right, or true for each of us. I think it can equate to a sort of social conformity. A spiral path is closer to how things more naturally evolve. Centring it helps us to reject judgement and commit to the truth of our path, whatever it looks like. Through my work I am reminding myself and other women of their power.”
