Artist Statement

My paintings are snapshots of my soul and explorations of power. I create to understand human relationships.

I craft frontiers between movement and stillness with lines and colour, often sculpting large amounts of paint with a pallet knife, or demarcating clear straight and circular lines with a brush. Through this, I explore agency, boundaries, and the ability to move and express ourselves freely.

The geometrical forms are bold. Scratching away at them makes a mark on the world.

The paint often represents areas of sovereignty, I allow bare or primed areas of the canvas to act as natural, and important, borders. A conversation is had between the two sites: one loud, one quiet.

Images coalesce in my mind which I release or represent in a process of catharsis. The ideas emerge from my emotions, body, experiences, and dreams and mix with my research on human rights, history, mythology, folklore and religion.

The colour, thickness and shapes relate to the themes I am representing. I use white to indicate sparseness, calm and the unknown, reds and pinks to suggest sexuality and rawness, and dark black-blues to denote grief. I often use metallic medium in gold, bronze and silver to convey awe, confidence and divinity.

My hope is that my work leaves the viewer feeling more powerful.
